In 1857, Philip Marquam, a gold-miner turned lawyer, purchased 298 acres that became known as Marquam Hill. In the early 1900’s, a medical school was built on the hill and over the years, “Pill Hill” has expanded into the current University of Oregon Health Sciences Center (OHSU),
which includes the Dental School and Portland Shriners Hospital.

The neighborhood overlooking Downtown and the Willamette River, is filled with a mixture of historic homes and apartment buildings. Its location in the West Hills offers prestige and accessibility to nature. For example, the Marquam Nature Nature Park, accessed on Sam Jackson Parkway, has miles of trails that wind through the West Hills, heading uphill towards Council Crest (Portland's highest point at 1073 feet above sea level). The park itself has over 44 acres of greenspace to enjoy and views of the entire city. Fairmont Road circles the entire peak and is a popular spot of running and walking.
Close to downtown Portland and serviced by public transportation (bus #8), this neighborhood is a great location for anyone. It is within walking distance to the hospital(s) and school and the Portland Aerial Tram which can whisk you to the bottom of the hill and the Willamette River in about 15 minutes.
